Retroplurid
Our system is very affected by concepts of retro aesthetics, music, trends, etc., but we feel it's sometimes in a different way than many other people who identify with retro aesthetics. In particular, our identification with these things has to do with the time in which we were born as well as our offline experiences.
Ever since we were very young, we tended to prefer older things over newer things, and when we got more heavily into music, this was reflected in our preference for music from the 1960s/1970s when it was the 2000s.
However, in the 2020s, things from our youth are partly considered retro too, especially technology and the internet. The computers I remember learning to type on are now considered "retro tech", and websites like my own, based on the creative sites I saw when they were new, are called "retro web".
My involvement in retro culture has involved the offline sphere, however. While I no longer live in the area that has this music scene, I am originally from an area that had a large tribute band scene, particularly for new wave bands like Depeche Mode, the Smiths, and Bauhaus. I started going to these shows in 2018 until I moved away in 2025.
I met a lot of cool older people who were young when new wave and goth were recent. They told me I, a younger Millennial, came off much more like a person from the 80s than a person from today, and this was very validating to my sense of identity.
The Gen X people from the new wave tribute shows were my main offline friend group for a long time, and while I'm no longer in touch with them due to not going to the same physical spaces anymore, I still consider myself more aligned with older generations in some respects, especially in terms of how I present myself in terms of media taste, aesthetic, and interests.
While I may not be surrounded by as many people from that generation anymore, I still present myself in a way offline that many people tell me reads as older or retro.
We consider the design of our website to be a good mix of offline and online retro - an old web style site that frequently mentions older music and has a Memphis Design background.
