Language notes

[ Discord guide ]

This is a guide to our conventions for using
languages other than English. This applies to
private messages as well as social media posts.

We are interested in learning other languages! So far, we have only studied German, but we have plans to learn other languages, including French, Spanish, and Russian.

We practice languages by using them in English conversations or making posts in them on social media. We put translations [in brackets].

If the message is not in English at all, it will be translated in its entirely at the end of the message but NOT italicized.

If most of the message is in English but part of it is in another language, the non-English part of the message will be italicized and the translation given immediately following, even if it is mid-sentence.

English used in sentences that are otherwise in another language will be italicized.

We translate all foreign language use except for usually not translating the following German words/phrases: Guten Tag [hello], Guten Morgen [good morning], ja [yes], nein [no], and danke [thank you].

Additionally, we may stop translating certain words and phrases with individual friends if it becomes clear to us that they have become familiar with those words or phrases.

We use neopronouns in other languages! Please see this page for information about that.

If you know any of the languages we use, please feel free to message in them and/or correct us if our use of the language is wrong!
